I went on a diving refresher course at the diving academy in Airlie Cove. They offered to take me out for a day’s diving on Sunday with their newly qualified dive masters, but they had to cancel as the wind was getting up to the point where it would be potentially unsafe.
So we decided to move on out and got as far as Mission Beach where we camped right on the palm-fringed waterside. The wind had indeed become very blustery and the ocean was very rough. I had a dive booked from Port Douglas to the Agincourt reef on Wednesday and I was concerned about the wisdom of going. In the end I moved it to Thursday when the forecast predicted the winds would settle a bit.
We went on a lovely walk along the beach and through the rainforest, which comes right down to the sea here, creating a unique ecology. A bird that is unique to the area is the cassowary, which is a bit like an emu but less scared of humans. This time we were lucky to find one as there are only 39 remaining.
