Waza’s Platypus Bush Camp

While waiting for a diving slot, we went on an overnight excursion to Eungella National Park which contains tracts of tropical rainforest and waterfalls. As if to make the point, it rained most of the time. But nobody minds warm rain and it was a welcome relief from the hot sun.

The route to Eungella took us through the sugar plantations. The cane has all been cut for this season, but next season’s plants are in full growth. Meandering throughout the area are the railways used to transport the cane to the processing plants.

The highlight of our trip was a stay at Waza’s Platypus Bush Camp. Waza lives in a tree house in the rainforest by a creek and he shares his home with the likes of us who want to camp there. The creek has a couple of pools – one used for swimming, the other for platypus viewing. We waited by the pool at dawn and dusk but the platypuses remained elusive. Other than us, Waza’s only company was a dog, a parrot and a huge Golden Orb spider.
