Like everything else in Australia, the seasons do exactly as they say on the tin. The ‘Wet’ is, well, wet. The ‘Wet Tropics’ are, yep, wet. We’ve been enduring at best high humidity and at worst continuous downpours. We’ve postponed our diving trip yet again until Saturday when we are promised calmer seas.
So this has given us the opportunity to explore further north than planned and find out what the Wet Tropics are all about.
First stop was the Boulders, near Cairns. This was an excellent camping spot and swimming hole. Given that you can’t swim in the ocean because of box jelly fish and crocodiles, these swimming holes are welcome refreshers.
After a brief look around Port Douglas we went to nearby Mosman Gorge. We followed a very interesting walking trail thorough the tropical rainforest. The rainforest here is thought to be one the few remaining tracts of ancient rainforest in the world. Children from the local indigenous community were having great fun hurling themselves into the rapids of the Mosman river. This was the first time we’ve really come across any Aborigines.
