New Year on Fraser Island

Fraser Island is a very special place, being the largest sand island in the world. Incredibly it is covered in dense rain forests, has pure freshwater lakes and creeks and also has areas of exposed sand dunes.

We rocked up at the departure point on the day before New Year’s Eve and started making enquiries about booking a 4WD and a barge crossing. Luckily we found a very helpful operator who got us on a barge at 10.15 a.m. New Year’s Eve with a return on the 2nd January.

The first part of the journey on the island is on sandy tracks which were very rutted and slippery and many people were getting stuck – but not us!

We stopped for a walk by a creek so clear that you could hardly tell there was any water in it. We then went on to Lake MacKenzie, the most famous lake. The water comes purely from raindrops and no river flows in or out of it. Being the height of the holiday season, it was very busy, but a dip in the water was very welcome as it was very hot.

We then continued to 75 mile beach which, like everything else in Australia, does exactly as is says on the tin. You are allowed to drive on the beach and we drove a short distance and struck camp on a sand dune with a clear view of the sea. A perfect spot for our New Year celebration!

On New Year’s day we continued along the beach, stopping at various sights, including a walk across sand dune to another, much less crowded lake, and the famous ship wreck.

That night we camped in the rain forest and got up early the next morning to catch the barge back to the mainland.
