A little further north we arrived in Bendigo, one of the most prosperous gold rush towns and doesn’t it like to show it! The town reminded us of the opulent architecture you might find in Paris or Budapest and seemed somewhat out of place in inland Australia.
The most interesting aspect of the town is the story of the Chinese immigrants who came over on hearing of the discovery of gold. There is a splendid museum explaining all about them. It houses the longest ceremonial dragon (100m) which is brought out for the Easter parade each year.
