The Murray River

The Murray river is part of one of the major river systems in Australia. We visited the wharf area of Echuca where we took a short cruise on a renovated paddle steamer, the Pevensey. The paddle steamers enabled wool from remote sheep stations to be transported back to Echuca and then loaded onto trains to Melbourne. From there the wool was shipped to the British wool mills.

The wharf area has been beautifully restored as has the saw mill that worked the red river gums that were also transported here by the paddle steamers. The wharf itself is constructed from red river gum as it can withstand alternate wetting and drying. Red river gums line the Murray and are very much part of the scene.

We were lucky to find an isolated spot to camp by the river in a small clearing.
