Mildura

Continuing downstream along the the Murray river with glimpses of the river from the road, we reached Mildura. This is were a system of locks and weirs has been constructed to provide reliable irrigation of the surrounding countryside and year-round navigation along the river, which can dry up in times of drought. The benefits are clear to be seen with the numerous fruit farms and wineries that we passed that appeared to be somehow growing out of the orange desert sand.

We’ve now crossed into South Australia and will be leaving the Murray river that has been our companion for a few days, as we head north around Port Augusta to reach the Eyre peninsula.
